Sustainable Thrust: An Inquiry into Ionic Thrusters

Owen Gaffner and Ethan Viaene

MECH-322 Fluid Mechanics

Spring 2024

  • In this research project, utilizing an anemometer to measure air velocity facilitated a comprehensive exploration of a possible alternative to fossil fuel burning thrusters. Velocity variations were accurately captured by holding the anemometer at the outlet of the system for each test run. Through systematic adjustments of the input voltage, insights into the functionality and limitations of ionic thrusters were obtained. This hands-on, multi-week project fostered a more profound comprehension of how to apply fluid mechanics principles in real-world design, allowing us to further appreciate the importance of fluid mechanics in engineering, particularly in aerospace applications. I also allowed us some insight into the plausibility of employing ionic thrusters in place of more traditional, fossil fuel consuming, methods of thrust production.
